Mid Week Meditation pt. 35

Based on Bible text: Luke 2:8-11 (KJV)

“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.  And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.”

This is the season we celebrate the promise of Joy!

While the shepherds were going about the business of watching over their flock by night, everything suddenly changed. Everything brightened considerably as an angel catches their attention with a divine proclamation! Immediately the night went from dull and routine to dynamic and remarkable, having all the excitement we can possibly imagine! “And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.”

The angelpromised “Great” joy! The first thing we discover is that the word “joy” or “chara” in Greek, was often associated with salvation. Secondly, “Great Joy” to all people meant great salvation to all people! There was universality in the declaration as the Messiah was coming, not just for the Jews, but for all people.

The Word says that the shepherds were shaken to the core. The truth is that it was not the suddenness of the angel’s appearance that frightened them; it was the subject of his declaration. “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.” This was no ordinary announcement. For more than 400 years God had remained silent. Folk probably wondered if God would ever deliver on His promise of a Messiah.

Not only did the shepherds hear the angel, but they believed him enough to act on their belief. The scripture says, “And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.” They didn’t sit around and wait for all their questions to be answered or until they could polish up their message and get all their facts straight. They simply internalized the information given to them and turned a “show and tell moment” into a “go and tell moment”. “Go tell it on the mountain!”

That is what we are feeling today as we celebrate the promise of Great Joy and the birth of our Savior! We are in awe of His birth into a world of sin, to save a wretch like us! We must spread the good news! We are charged to “Go tell it on our mountain, that a Savior is born!”
